PhD: Evolutionary Optimization and Learning

What: Two Ph.D. positions with a focus on real-valued evolutionary computation are available. The aim is to contribute to the design of capable black-box optimization strategies through an understanding of algorithm properties on simple test problems. Areas of focus include constrained optimization, surrogate model assisted evolutionary computation, and evolutionary optimization and machine learning.

A prior degree in Computer Science is required. A graduate degree, publications in good venues, and a strong background in continuous mathematics (linear algebra and multi-variable calculus) are valuable assets.

Description

The Inria research institute (https://www.inria.fr/en/inria-ecosystem) invites applications for multiple permanent researcher positions to start in the 2022-2023 academic year. High performance computing (HPC) and/or Machine Learning assisted big optimization is among its top priorities for the recruitment. This hot topic is a major focus of the BONUS research group, which is part of the Inria Lille – Nord Europe research center located at Lille (North of France). Qualified applicants in Computer Science are invited to apply with the objective to join the BONUS research group as a permanent researcher.

Qualifications

The BONUS team addresses big optimization problems (high-dimensional in decision variables and/or objectives, and/or with computationally expensive black-box functions) using mainly Machine Learning-assisted optimization and High-performance (parallel) optimization.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. BONUS is interested in applicants having a strong background in at least one of its research lines: Machine Learning-assisted optimization or parallel optimization. Candidates with only HPC-related profile, highly motivated to adapt their activities to the context of big optimization using HPC in keeping with the BONUS research program, are also invited to apply.

post-doc: Evolutionary Machine Learning

What: We are hiring a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Evolutionary Machine Learning) to join the team and play a key role in conducting research and teaching in the areas of machine learning, evolutionary computation, and artificial intelligence. The position will be based at the centrally located University of Technology Sydney – City campus and will report directly to Professor Amir H. Gandomi. This role will involve:

- Conducting research and writing research papers.
- Collaborating in government research grant applications and industrial engagement by providing their preliminary results and writing the proposal.
- Working collaboratively with members of the research centre.

About you
- You have extensive hands-on experience in evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning with a strong programming background. You will also possess:
- A PhD Degree in computer science or related topics with a strong knowledge of machine learning and artificial intelligence, particularly evolutionary intelligence.
- Programming skills in Matlab and/or Python is essential.
- High-quality publication record in the fields of machine learning, data science, evolutionary computation, or a very closely related field.
- Ability to deliver high-quality results for government-funded research projects
- Ability to develop competitive grant proposals, industry links and projects.

Remuneration & Benefits
Base Salary: $109,285 (Level B.2)
This position is full-time and an appointment will be made on a fixed-term basis for 2 years.
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

research position: Contract for Master - Data Mining and Optimization

Contract for a person holding a Master degree within the scope modelling and optimization of the plastic blow-moulding process to be carried out at the IPC (Institute of Polymers and Composites) at the University of Minho in Guimarães, Portugal. This corresponds to a normal work contract, not a scholarship.

Time course
12 months renewable up to 24 months.

Scholarship
Scholarship holder with a Master degree in engineering and with knowledge of computer programing. This fellow will have as main tasks: the development of an optimization framework based on data mining and artificial intelligence, their subsequent connection to the simulation codes related to the blow-moulding process, and the application of the tools developed to solve problems in the industrial reality.

Objectives
The main objective is the development of an optimization framework able to deal with the plastic blow-moulding process.
The specific objectives are:
Detailed analysis of the state of knowledge in optimization techniques, based on data mining and artificial intelligence, aiming to identify the most promising ones for integration in the proposed solutions;
Specification, within the scope of the project, of the numerical modelling tools of the processes to be considered, to be able to predict the final properties of the products obtained;
Development/adaptation of the optimization tools to link them with the numerical modelling routines developed by the co-workers within the project;
Practical application of the developed optimization tools.

research position: Senior Research Associate Position for Logistics Optimisation

What: We are looking for a new member of the Connected Cumbria team embedded within the Faculty of Science & Technology and will work closely with academics under the Centre for Transport and Logistics (CENTRAL), supporting the new phase of the Cumbria Innovations Platform programme (CUSP II) at Lancaster University.

The project will investigate and develop climate-smart solutions aimed at small to medium enterprises (SMEs) located in Cumbria. The Connected Cumbria team will work together assisting SMEs in developing innovative new products and services and addressing those issues of connectivity. The successful candidate will work within a team as a Senior Research Associate for Logistics Optimisation, coordinating activities to benchmark and improve the logistical, social and digital connectivity of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the county.
